Chapter 5: Journey in the Sewers

The gargantuan salamander slowly swam its way along the sewers its large black eyes going this way and that staring at the sewer ceiling. Stopping for a moment at a fork in the sewer river it raised its mouth out of the water, a slender foot sticking out of the side of it, smelling the air around him. Smelling the familiar stench of its home down the tunnel to the left. Growling a bit in anticipation of a possible reward from his master, he dived back underwater and sped his way along to his home.

The further the Salamander swam down this part of the sewer the more dilapidated the sewer walls looked, parts of the wall here and there were crumbling from erosion and lack of maintenance. Soon the Salamander saw what he was looking for. A certain green light emanating from a large hole in the wall. Crawling out of the sewer the Salamander went into the hole, heading towards the light. The light dimmed as the salamander approached and seemed fade away as the creature walked through it. When it passed the light started to glow vibrant again.

Going down the passageway the Salamander finally reached his home, after hours of swimming in the dirty water of the city above and a couple walking down this path which opened into a large cavern. The cavern was dimly lit but it was in better shape than the sewer itself. In the middle of the cavern was a large hole that could have been judged as an abyss, alongside the caverns walls there were drawings of other large salamanders and lizards all around, either slaying large insects or large worms. In the far back of the cavern there was a large building made of rotted wood, the wood looked centuries old and appeared it could break at the slightest breath.

Slowly making his way toward the building, the Salamander spat the woman he caught at the bank out gently on the ground in front of the door. After doing this a quiet, raspy voice called out from the interior of the building. "Good job, little one." Stepping out of the building a woman came out. She was a lot smaller than the salamander, and a bit shorter than the woman that was delivered to her. She had bushy shoulder length brown hair, brown eyes, and was wearing what appeared to be a dress made out of old salamander skin. In the city she was only known as The Witch of the Sewers, but when she left the safety of her home she called herself "Sallymender" Staring at the woman curiously, she gently patted the salamander gently on the noggin. "Go join your brother and sister," she said prodding the woman with her toe, "I'll give you your reward shortly."

The salamander squeaked and nuzzled the woman for a second or two before it scrambled off into the darkness.

Kneeling over now inspecting the unconscious woman, Sallymender gently touched the forehead of the woman. Feeling the memories of the woman pour into her head, she learned what happened to her. Frowning at the memory of the Plaid Whip, she pulled her finger back away from her head. "Well. That was unfortunate. Hmm. What kind of person are you?" Sally then gently placed her hand over the woman's heart. Shuddering at all the emotions flying into her body at once, she pulled her hand away from her heart. Mumbling to herself as she sat down next to the woman. "You are a complicated one." Getting to her feet steadily, for whenever she touched others minds or hearts she became very woozy. After awhile when she got control of her equalibrium again, she picked the woman up and walked into the building.

Inside the building there was a lone lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. The dim light barely illuminated what looked like a one room house. Making her way carefully towards the bed, she set the woman down on the small bed and wrapped her up with her moldy old blankets. "We'll talk I suppose when you wake up." Yawning to herself Sallymender sat down next to the small wooden table and watched the strange woman sleep.
